How it came to be

Polynesian voyagers are thought to have settled Rapa Nui by around the 12th century. Islanders carved about 900 moai, mostly from tuff at the Rano Raraku quarry, and raised many on more than 300 ceremonial platforms.

Dutch navigator Jacob Roggeveen arrived on Easter Sunday 1722. Peruvian slave raids in 1862 and epidemics cut the population to 111 by 1877. Chile made the area a national park in 1935, and UNESCO listed it in 1995.
