How it came to be

Walter Gropius opened the Bauhaus in Weimar on 1 April 1919 by merging the city's academy of fine art with its school of arts and crafts. The experimental Haus am Horn was built there for the school's 1923 exhibition.

Political pressure forced a move to Dessau in 1925, where Gropius's school building and seven Masters' Houses were finished in 1926. His successor Hannes Meyer led the design of the trade union school at Bernau, and the Bauhaus closed under Nazi pressure in 1933.
