How it came to be

Kutná Hora in central Bohemia grew rich on silver. In 1300 King Wenceslaus II issued a new mining code, and soon after the town became the seat of the central mint of the Czech lands, striking the Prague groschen. It became the second most important town in Bohemia after Prague.

Work on the church of St Barbara began in 1388, probably first under Johann Parler, son of Peter Parler. The Hussite Wars halted it for over 60 years; it resumed in 1481 and was completed only in 1905. In 1421 the Hussites burned Sedlec Abbey.

On 18 January 1409 King Wenceslaus IV signed here the Decree of Kutná Hora, which changed the voting at Prague University. The historic centre was inscribed in 1995 with the church of St Barbara and the Cathedral of Our Lady at Sedlec.
