How it came to be

The National Archaeological Park of Tierradentro lies in the central cordillera of the Andes, in the municipality of Inzá, Cauca, in south-western Colombia. People living on the slopes and in the valleys dug its underground tombs, or hypogea, between the 6th and 10th centuries. The sites were abandoned before the 13th century.

The park holds 162 hypogea in their original places: 64 at Alto de Segovia, 62 at Alto del Aguacate, 23 at Alto de San Andrés and 13 at Alto del Duende. A typical tomb has a west-facing entrance and a spiral staircase leading 5 to 8 m down to a main chamber ringed by smaller ones. The largest reach 12 m across and 7 m deep, and their walls are painted in red, black and white with geometric, human and animal designs.

The tombs were used by elite groups for collective secondary burial, and their interiors are thought to mirror the houses of the period. The park also has stone statues of standing figures with arms crossed over the chest, the men in banded headdresses and the women in turbans. It was inscribed in 1995.
