How it came to be
Over about 6 million years, the Colorado River cut a gorge 445 km long and about 1.5 km deep. Its exposed strata record some 2 billion years of geological history, and at least 11 Native American tribes, including the Havasupai and Hopi, have ties to the land.
Theodore Roosevelt, who visited in 1903, proclaimed the canyon a national monument on 11 January 1908. Woodrow Wilson signed the national park act on 26 February 1919, and UNESCO inscribed the park in 1979.
