How it came to be

Lake Baikal formed in a continental rift roughly 25 to 30 million years ago, making it the oldest lake on Earth. At 1,642 metres it is also the deepest, holding about 22–23% of the world's fresh surface water.

Up to 330 rivers flow in, but only the Angara flows out. Endemic life includes the nerpa, a freshwater seal, and more than 350 amphipod species; 8.8 million hectares were inscribed in 1996.
