How it came to be
People probably reached South Florida 10,000 to 20,000 years ago; the Tequesta and Calusa who later lived here had disappeared by about 1800 through disease, war and slavery. Napoleon Bonaparte Broward ran for governor in 1904 on a promise to drain the Everglades and ordered drainage works from 1905 to 1910.
In response, the Florida legislature created a commission led by Ernest F. Coe in 1928 to campaign for a national park. Congress authorised the park in 1934 but allotted no money, and President Harry Truman dedicated it on 6 December 1947. About a month earlier Marjory Stoneman Douglas had published The Everglades: River of Grass.
The park was inscribed as a World Heritage site in 1979. It was on the List of World Heritage in Danger from 1993 to 2007, and again from 2010. Water flowing into the park is estimated to have fallen by about 60 percent from pre-drainage levels.
