How it came to be

Off the coast of Belize in Central America runs the largest reef complex in the Atlantic-Caribbean and the second-largest reef system in the world. Beyond the barrier reef lie three atolls, Turneffe, Lighthouse Reef and Glover's Reef, and about 450 sand and mangrove cayes.

West Indian manatees, green and hawksbill turtles and American crocodiles live here, and red-footed boobies nest on Half Moon Caye. More than 500 fish species and 65 species of stony coral have been recorded.

Seven protected areas, among them the Blue Hole and Half Moon Caye, were inscribed in 1996. The site was on the danger list from 2009 to 2018.
