How it came to be

Martin Luther was born in Eisleben in 1483 and died in the same town on 18 February 1546. In between, on 31 October 1517, he posted his 95 Theses at the Castle Church in Wittenberg, which began the Reformation. The property is made up of six buildings tied to the lives of Luther and his fellow reformer Philipp Melanchthon.

Luther's birth house in Eisleben burned to the ground in 1689, and a new building on the site opened to the public in 1693, with a different plan and size. The house long shown as the place of his death was bought by the town in 1862 because a chronicler had mixed up two houses in 1726. In 2013 it became clear that Luther actually died in a house at Am Markt 56.

In Wittenberg the property includes the Luther House, where he lived and worked, Melanchthon's House, the Town Church and the Castle Church. The six buildings were inscribed in 1996.
