How it came to be
Lake Turkana is about 290 km long and is considered the world's largest permanent desert lake. The Omo River supplies about 90% of its water. Teleki and von Höhnel named it Lake Rudolf in 1888, and Kenya renamed it in 1975.
At Koobi Fora on the east shore, sediments span roughly four million to one million years ago. Richard Leakey set up a base camp there in 1968, and skull KNM-ER 1470 was found in 1972. The parks were listed in 1997.
