How it came to be
In 1623 Louis XIII built a hunting lodge at Versailles, southwest of Paris, and Philibert Le Roy replaced it with a small château in 1631–34. From 1661 Louis XIV began enlarging it, with Louis Le Vau as his first architect.
The court and government moved in on 6 May 1682 and stayed until 6 October 1789. Jules Hardouin-Mansart began the Hall of Mirrors in 1678, André Le Nôtre designed the gardens, and UNESCO inscribed the site in 1979.
