How it came to be
Around 3000 BC the first settlement, Troy I, rose on the mound of Hisarlik, about 4.8 km from the mouth of the Dardanelles. Towns were rebuilt on the spot for more than 3,000 years, and Homer's Trojan War is placed in the 13th or 12th century BC.
Frank Calvert identified the mound as classical Ilion in 1865, and Heinrich Schliemann began digging in 1870. Schliemann took Troy II for Homer's city, but it proved several centuries older than the Mycenaean era. UNESCO inscribed the site in 1998.
