How it came to be

From southern Bahia to northern Espírito Santo in Brazil, eight protected areas safeguard about 112,000 hectares of Atlantic Forest and coastal restinga. Monte Pascoal here is held to be the first land seen by the Portuguese navigator Pedro Álvares Cabral, on 22 April 1500.

Protection began with the Sooretama Biological Reserve in 1943 and continued with Monte Pascoal, Una and Pau Brasil, and in 1999 Descobrimento National Park was created. The reserves were inscribed that same year.

They hold 261 mammal, 620 bird and 280 amphibian species, 185 of them threatened. The land around Monte Pascoal is Pataxó territory, and after confrontations part of the park was returned to the Pataxó.
