How it came to be

Across the states of Paraná and São Paulo in south-eastern Brazil, 25 protected areas safeguard some 470,000 hectares of Atlantic Forest. The land runs from mountains to the sea, with an estuary, wild rivers, islands, waterfalls, karst and more than 300 caves.

About 120 mammal and 350 bird species live here, among them the woolly spider monkey, the largest primate in the Americas. The black-faced lion tamarin, found only in this region, was first recorded in 1990.

Superagüi National Park has been recognised as natural and historical heritage of Paraná since 1970 and has been a core zone of the Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve since 1991. The reserves were inscribed in 1999. Illegal logging, poaching and the isolation of the protected areas remain serious threats.
