How it came to be
Litomyšl grew in the 13th century on the trade route between Bohemia and Moravia. Under the Pernštejn family, who held the estate from 1567, building of the castle began in 1568, led by the architect Jan Baptista Avostalis and his brother Oldřich. Most of it was finished by 1580.
The castle has four wings on three floors, with the south wing a two-storey arcaded gallery closing the courtyard. It is a mature Czech form of the arcaded castle first developed in Italy. The Trauttmansdorff family owned it from 1649, and in 1796-97 a theatre was built in the west wing, whose stage machinery and painted auditorium survive intact.
The composer Bedřich Smetana was born in the castle brewery in 1824. An opera festival named after him has been held at the castle since 1949, and in 1994 President Václav Havel invited seven Central European presidents to meet here. The castle was inscribed in 1999.
