How it came to be
In 1494 Castilian troops fought the Guanche people of Tenerife in the Aguere valley. After the conquest, Alonso Fernández de Lugo founded a town beside the valley's lagoon in 1496–97, about 550 metres above sea level.
The town had no walls, and its Lower Town was laid out on a grid. That plan is thought to have served as a model for Spanish colonial cities in the Americas. La Laguna remained the islands' capital until 1723.
