How it came to be
Cueva de las Manos is a cave in the Río Pinturas canyon in Argentine Patagonia. The oldest paintings date to about 7300 BC, and hunter-gatherers, possibly ancestors of the Tehuelche, kept adding images until around AD 700.
More than 2,000 hand stencils cover the walls: 829 left hands and only 31 right, suggesting painters held a bone spray pipe in the right hand. Guanaco hunts appear too. Carlos Gradin began a 30-year study of the cave in 1964.
