How it came to be
The limestone karst here began forming about 400 million years ago in the Palaeozoic. Phong Nha Cave holds Cham inscriptions from the 9th century, and in 1824 the Nguyen emperor Minh Mang granted the cave an honorific title.
A 50 km² nature reserve was declared in 1986, upgraded to a national park in 2001 and inscribed by UNESCO in 2003. Son Doong Cave, found by local man Ho Khanh in 1991, was surveyed in 2009 and proved to be one of the largest caves known.
