How it came to be
Ischigualasto and Talampaya are neighbouring parks in northwestern Argentina. Six rock formations laid down in the Triassic, roughly 245 to 208 million years ago, preserve early dinosaurs, mammal ancestors and at least 100 plant species.
In 1991 Ricardo Martínez of the University of San Juan found Eoraptor, one of the earliest known dinosaurs. Ischigualasto became a provincial park in 1971 and Talampaya in 1975; UNESCO listed them together in 2000.
