How it came to be
This stretch of eastern Bolivia on the Brazilian border was explored in 1908 by Percy Fawcett, mapping the frontier for the Bolivian government. At its heart lies the Huanchaca plateau, where patches of cerrado savanna have been isolated for millions of years.
The park was founded on 28 June 1979 as Huanchaca National Park. In 1988 it was renamed after the Bolivian biologist Noel Kempff Mercado, who had been killed by drug traffickers after stumbling on a cocaine laboratory on the plateau.
Covering about 1.52 million ha, from Amazon evergreen forest to cerrado and wetlands, the park holds about 4,000 plant species and more than 600 bird species. It was inscribed in 2000.
