How it came to be
Lake Ohrid is thought to be 3 to 5 million years old and holds more than 200 endemic species. The town on its shore was known in antiquity as Lychnidos, and seven early Christian basilicas from the 4th to early 6th centuries have been found in its old quarter.
In 886 Clement, a disciple of Cyril and Methodius, began teaching here and founded the Ohrid Literary School, training some 3,500 students. Tsar Samuel made Ohrid the capital of the First Bulgarian Empire from 990 to 1015.
