How it came to be
Brazil created Jaú National Park in 1980, protecting the entire basin of the Jaú, a blackwater river that flows into the Rio Negro. Covering about 2.37 million hectares, the park was first inscribed on the World Heritage List on its own in 2000.
In 2003 the property was enlarged with Anavilhanas, Amanã and Mamirauá, forming the Central Amazon Conservation Complex. It includes seasonally flooded várzea and igapó forests, a vast river archipelago, and 64 recorded species of electric fish.
