How it came to be

Durmitor is a massif of the Dinaric Alps in northwestern Montenegro, rising to 2,523 metres at Bobotov Kuk. Glaciers shaped its terrain and left 18 glacial lakes, and the Tara River runs through a canyon along its northern side. About 80 km long and 1,300 m deep, the Tara Canyon is described as the deepest gorge in Europe.

A national park was created in 1952, and it was inscribed as a World Heritage site in 1980. In 1996 the Committee raised concern about rapid, unplanned growth of the village of Žabljak inside the park. In 2005 IUCN recommended redrawing the boundary to match the park's 1997 physical plan, leaving Žabljak out, for a property of about 34,000 hectares.

At the same time a dam was planned on the Tara that would have flooded 12 km of the canyon. A UNESCO and IUCN mission visited in January 2005 and recommended placing the site on the List in Danger if the dam were built. The government then cancelled the project, which UNESCO announced that April.
