How it came to be

For more than 2,000 years, nomadic peoples have made their base along the Orkhon River. Remains of Turkic and Uyghur capitals still lie in the valley.

In the 13th century the Mongol Empire placed its capital, Karakorum, here. When Kublai moved the capital east to Dadu (today’s Beijing), Karakorum lost its place. In the 16th century, stone from its ruins is said to have gone into Erdene Zuu, a Buddhist monastery nearby.
