How it came to be

Around 518 BC the Achaemenid king Darius I raised a vast terrace at the foot of Kuh-e Rahmat and began building a new capital, Persepolis, about 60 km northeast of present-day Shiraz.

Darius ordered the Apadana audience hall and the Treasury, which his son Xerxes I completed. The Hall of a Hundred Columns was finished under Artaxerxes I, and the city took more than a century to complete. Its columns rose about 20 m.

In 330 BC Alexander the Great's army took the city and later set it on fire. The wooden parts burned, leaving stone columns and carved staircases. UNESCO listed Persepolis in 1979.
