How it came to be
In 384 BC Ionian Greeks from Paros settled on Hvar in the Croatian Adriatic. They divided the plain into a chora, a geometric grid of 75 parcels of about 16 hectares each, bordered by dry-stone walls.
They built cisterns and gutters to save rainwater and small stone shelters called trims for tools. Grapes and olives have been grown here without a break for 2,400 years, and the original layout survives almost intact.
The plain was inscribed in 2008 as a landscape showing how Greek land division spread across the Mediterranean. Rural depopulation and the abandonment of traditional farming now threaten it.
