How it came to be
On the north shore of Lake Geneva, vineyard terraces run down to the water for about 30 km, from Chillon Castle to the eastern edge of Lausanne. Vines were probably grown here in Roman times, but the present terraces go back to the 11th century, when Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries held the land. The main grape is Chasselas.
In 1977 voters in the canton of Vaud passed a popular initiative called Save Lavaux with 55% of the vote, and a protection law followed in 1979. When the new cantonal constitution of 2003 left out the protection article, a second initiative restored it in 2005 with 81%.
Lavaux was inscribed in July 2007, covering 898 hectares. In 2014 a third initiative to limit building further was rejected, and the government's counter-proposal passed with 68%.
