How it came to be
The province of Hälsingland in eastern Sweden keeps large farmhouses built entirely of wood. Farmers put up two or three dwelling houses, and some were used only for festivities. Most date from the 19th century, and the shape of porches and window frames differed from parish to parish.
Inside are wall paintings, stencilled patterns and expensive imported wallpaper. Itinerant painters from Dalarna brought a style of religious scenes, ribbons and large flowers, and Bible stories were moved into Hälsingland settings.
Work on a nomination began in the 1990s. A first nomination of 15 places, including a whole village, was turned down in 2009 with advice to narrow the selection. A second nomination centred on the painted interiors, and seven farmhouses were inscribed in 2012.
