How it came to be

In the north-western Congo Basin, where Cameroon, the Central African Republic and the Republic of the Congo meet, three national parks run into one another: Lobéké in Cameroon, Dzanga-Ndoki in the Central African Republic and Nouabalé-Ndoki in Congo. Together they cover 746,309 hectares.

The forest is split by borders, but its animals have always crossed them. After the Yaoundé Declaration of 17 March 1999, the three governments signed a cooperation agreement on 7 December 2000 that created the Sangha Trinational. In 2007 a foundation was set up to fund the three parks over the long term.

Forest clearings called bais draw forest elephants, western lowland gorillas, chimpanzees, sitatunga and bongo. Logging and hunting are banned inside the parks, and the site was inscribed in 2012.
