How it came to be
Around 1150 the Almohad ruler Abd al-Mu'min built a kasbah at the mouth of the Bou Regreg river, today's Kasbah of the Udayas. The Almohads named the town Ribat al-Fath, the 'stronghold of victory'.
In the late 12th century Ya'qub al-Mansur began a vast mosque, but work stopped after his death in 1199, leaving the 44-metre Hassan Tower. From 1912 the French protectorate made Rabat its capital and built a new town.
