How it came to be

The Hamiguitan Range is a ridge running north to south along the Pujada Peninsula in Davao Oriental, in southeastern Mindanao, from 75 m to 1,637 m above sea level. It lies in the southeastern part of the Eastern Mindanao Biodiversity Corridor, with land and water habitats changing with altitude from the lowlands to the summit. Near the top, between 1,160 and 1,200 m, is a mossy pygmy forest whose trees grow low like bonsai.

IUCN's evaluation counts 1,380 recorded species, 341 of them endemic to the Philippines. Of the amphibians 75 percent are endemic, and of the reptiles 84 percent, and eight species are found nowhere but Mount Hamiguitan. The summit pygmy forest is the only known habitat of the pitcher plant Nepenthes hamiguitanensis and of the butterfly Delias magsadana. The threatened Philippine eagle and Philippine cockatoo also live here.

The sanctuary was nominated in 2012 but referred back by the World Heritage Committee at its 37th session in 2013. The Philippines then enlarged it from 6,350 ha to 16,923 ha, about two and a half times, and some 30,000 ha of indigenous land claims overlapping the property were settled by an agreement between the provincial government and indigenous representatives. It was inscribed in 2014, the first World Heritage Site in Mindanao.
