Climats, terroirs of Burgundy

How it came to be
On the slopes running about 50 km south of Dijon, medieval monastic orders began tying wines to the exact plots they came from. Cistercians received land for the Clos de Vougeot from 1109 and walled it in by 1336.
The Valois Dukes of Burgundy backed this link between wine and place, and Beaune became the centre of the wine trade. Appellation decrees in 1936 fixed the boundaries, and 1,247 climats were inscribed in 2015.
