How it came to be

The Landscapes of Dauria are a group of protected areas of the Daurian steppe shared by Mongolia and Russia. The steppe extends from eastern Mongolia into Russian Siberia and northeastern China. Cyclical climate change, with distinct dry and wet periods, has produced a wide range of grassland, forest, lake and wetland ecosystems.

On the Russian side, Daursky Nature Reserve was established in 1987 to protect the dry steppes and wetlands of southern Siberia, and its buffer zone covers the Barun-Torey and Zun-Torey lakes. A plan to introduce Przewalski's horse there in the 1980s was cancelled after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The Mongolian side contributes the Mongol Daguur Biosphere Reserve, the Chuh-Nuur lake cluster and the Ugtam Nature Refuge.

According to UNESCO the area is home to rare birds such as the white-naped crane, great bustard, relict gull and swan goose, and to millions of migratory birds. It also lies on the cross-border migration route of the Mongolian gazelle, and a new reserve, the Dzeren Valley, was created in Russia to protect it. The property was inscribed as a World Heritage site in 2017.
