How it came to be
Along the Thai side of the Tenasserim Range, on the border with Myanmar, nearly 409,000 hectares of forest stretch across the provinces of Ratchaburi, Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan. The complex is made up of three national parks and one wildlife sanctuary.
It lies where the plants and animals of the Himalayan, Indochinese and Sumatran realms meet. Eight species of wild cat live here, among them the tiger and the clouded leopard, along with the Siamese crocodile, the Asian elephant and the banteng. A species of Prunus found nowhere else was discovered here in 2015.
Kaeng Krachan, the core park, became a reserve in 1964 and in 1981 Thailand's 28th national park. In 2021 the World Heritage Committee voted 12 to 9 to inscribe the complex. Days before, United Nations special rapporteurs had urged a deferral, citing the rights of Karen villagers removed from their village inside the park.
