How it came to be

In 1028 the bishop's seat was moved from Zeitz to Naumburg, and work on the first cathedral began the next year. That church was consecrated in 1044, and the crypt added in the late 12th century survives largely unchanged.

Rebuilding began around 1210 under Bishop Engelhard. In the mid-13th century an early Gothic west choir was added, and the workshop known as the Naumburg Master carved twelve life-size donor statues and the west rood screen. The couple Uta von Ballenstedt and Ekkehard II of Meissen are the best known.

With a Romanesque nave between Gothic choirs to east and west, the cathedral is unusual among medieval cathedrals because its architecture, sculpture and stained glass were conceived as one work. In 1542 the first German Protestant bishop took office here. It was inscribed on 1 July 2018.
