How it came to be

Târgu Jiu is a town in Gorj County in south-western Romania. In 1916, during the First World War, many soldiers died defending it against the Central Powers. The National League of Gorj Women asked Constantin Brâncuși to make their memorial; he had been born in the nearby village of Hobița and had worked in Târgu Jiu as a boy. He accepted the commission in 1935 and refused payment.

In 1937-1938 Brâncuși set his works in two parks linked by the narrow Avenue of Heroes. The Table of Silence, the Gate of the Kiss and the Endless Column stand on an axis about 1.3 kilometres long running west to east, and the older Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul stands on the same line. The column stacks 15 rhomboid modules with a half-module at top and bottom to a height of 29.3 metres; the modules were made at the Central Workshops in Petroșani and assembled by his friend, the engineer Ștefan Georgescu-Gorjan. The ensemble was inaugurated on 27 October 1938.

In the 1950s the communist government planned to pull down the column and sell it as scrap, but the plan was never carried out. By the 1990s the column was tilting, cracked and corroded, and it was placed on the World Monuments Watch in 1996; it was restored between 1998 and 2000 by the Romanian government, the World Monuments Fund, the World Bank and other partners. The ensemble was inscribed as a World Heritage site in 2024.
