How it came to be

Between 1302 and 1397 the interiors of eight religious and secular buildings in the walled city of Padua were covered with frescoes by several painters: Giotto, Guariento di Arpo, Giusto de' Menabuoi, Altichiero da Zevio, Jacopo Avanzi and Jacopo da Verona.

Giotto's cycle in the Scrovegni Chapel is held to have begun a revolutionary development in mural painting. In some frescoes the patrons who commissioned them appear as characters in the story.

The buildings fall into four groups: the Scrovegni Chapel and Eremitani church; the Palazzo della Ragione, the chapel of the Carraresi palace and the Baptistery; the Basilica of St Anthony and the Oratory of San Giorgio; and the Oratory of San Michele. They were inscribed in 2021.
