How it came to be

Si Thep is an ancient town in central Thailand belonging to the Dvaravati culture, which thrived from the 6th to the 10th century. It is a twin town, an Inner and an Outer Town each surrounded by moats, covering 4.7 square kilometres. Its people adapted religion and art from India into a style of their own known as the Si Thep School of Art.

Khao Khlang Nai is a Buddhist sanctuary of the 6th to 7th century. Khao Khlang Nok, a terraced laterite stupa of the 7th to 8th century with sides 64 metres long, is among the largest known Dvaravati structures; the Fine Arts Department excavated it in 2008. About 15 kilometres to the west, Khao Thamorrat Cave holds carvings in relief.

The site was discovered in 1904 and became a historical park in 1984. On 19 September 2023 the town and the two monuments were inscribed as a World Heritage site.
