How it came to be
Near the village of Srebarna on the west bank of the Danube in north-eastern Bulgaria lies a freshwater lake of more than 600 hectares. It is the largest left after the marshes along the Danube were drained, and it was connected to the river until a dyke was built in 1949.
Declared a reserve in 1948, it was the first wetland in Bulgaria with legal protection. Ninety-nine bird species nest here and about 80 migratory species winter, and it holds the only Dalmatian pelican colony in the country.
It was inscribed in 1983 and was on the danger list from 1992 to 2003. In 1994 a channel was dug to let spring water flow in from the Danube.
