How it came to be

Hampi is the site of the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, founded in 1336 by Harihara I and Bukka I, former commanders in the Hoysala army. Building went on for about 200 years, and Krishnadevaraya added to the Virupaksha temple and worked on the Vitthala temple.

The Portuguese traveller Domingo Paes, visiting in 1520, called the city as large as Rome and very beautiful to the sight. In 1565, after a coalition of Deccan sultanates defeated the empire at the Battle of Talikota, the city was plundered for six months and abandoned.

Colonel Colin Mackenzie, born in Scotland, surveyed the ruins in 1800. More than 1,600 remains survive, and the Virupaksha temple is still in worship. Hampi was inscribed in 1986 and was on the List of World Heritage in Danger from 1999 to 2006.
