How it came to be

Lake Malawi lies in the western branch of the Rift Valley and is one of the world's deepest lakes, with an estimated 1,000 fish species. The park at its southern end has over 350 species of rock-dwelling mbuna cichlids, all but five endemic to the lake.

David Livingstone became the first European to see the lake in 1859, and by 1875 Scottish Presbyterians had set up a mission at Cape Maclear. The park was established on 24 November 1980 and inscribed by UNESCO in 1984.
