How it came to be

Cyprus was annexed by the Byzantine Empire in 965. In the Troodos mountains, Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis (St Nicholas of the Roof) at Kakopetria is an 11th-century monastery and the oldest surviving katholikon on the island. Small 12th-century churches such as Asinou (Panagia Phorbiotissa) at Nikitari went up in the mountain villages.

According to an inscription on the north lintel, the murals of Panagia tou Araka at Lagoudera were finished in December 1192. They were painted by Theodore Apsevdis, a monk trained in Constantinople. In the 14th century the water-damaged paintings were repaired, and a deacon named Leontios signed the restoration.

Asinou was declared an ancient monument in April 1932, and a study by William Hepburn Buckler and others was published in 1933. Nine churches were inscribed in 1985, and Agia Sotira at Palaichori was added in 2001, bringing the total to ten. Nine stand in the District of Nicosia; only Timios Stavros at Pelendri is in the District of Limassol.
