How it came to be

After the Mongol invasion of 1241–42 devastated the area, King Béla IV began a royal residence on Castle Hill in 1247. Buda grew on the Danube's right bank, while Pest developed separately on the flat left bank.

The Chain Bridge linked the two in 1849. Buda, Pest and Óbuda merged in 1873, Andrássy Avenue was laid out from 1872, and in 1896 continental Europe's first underground railway opened beneath it.
