On 31 October 1840 Andersen, aged 35, left Copenhagen on a journey of almost a year through Germany, Italy, Malta, Greece and Constantinople, returning across the Black Sea and up the Danube by way of Vienna, Prague and Dresden, and reached Denmark again on 13 July 1841. The earnings from his play The Mulatto were meant to pay for the trip, but after The Moorish Maid failed he had to apply to the king for an extra grant to reach Constantinople. The journey became A Poet's Bazaar, published on 30 April 1842.
