He arrived with Tischbein on 25 February; Vesuvius was smoking on their left all the way, and he was quietly glad to see it at last with his own eyes.
- 1841-02
He arrived with Holst and Rothe on 28 February by way of Terracina and Mola di Gaeta, and left on 15 March aboard the steamship Leonidas, bound for Athens.
- 1867-08
He arrived about 1 August and took rooms in the city while the ship sat out its quarantine. On 9 August he went to see the king's palace and wrote home that he had accepted a post as a senator's secretary in Washington.
