On 3 September 1786 Goethe, aged 37, slipped away from the spa at Karlsbad without saying goodbye and travelled to Italy under the name of a painter, Johann Philipp Möller. He went by way of Venice to Rome, toured Naples and Sicily, returned to Rome until the following April, and was back in Weimar on 18 June 1788. His diaries and letters from the journey were reworked between 1813 and 1817 into the Italian Journey (Italienische Reise).

On 3 September he stole out at 3 in the morning so that his friends at the spa could not detain him, and set off alone in a post-chaise with only a portmanteau and a knapsack.
