How it came to be
Set in a bend of the Adige, Verona became a Roman colony in 89 BC. Its amphitheatre, the Arena, is thought to date from the 1st century AD and once held about 30,000 people; operas have been staged there since 1913.
The della Scala family ruled in the 13th and 14th centuries, and Cangrande I enclosed the city with new walls. Verona submitted to Venice in 1405 and came under Austrian control in 1798.
