How it came to be
Ferrara first appears in 753 in a document of the Lombard king Desiderius. Walls enclosed the town in the 12th century, and in 1264 Obizzo II d'Este became lord for life, beginning Este rule that lasted until 1598.
After citizens burdened by taxes and floods rioted in May 1385, Niccolò II d'Este had Bartolino da Novara build Castello Estense. From 1492 Biagio Rossetti laid out a new northern district for Ercole I, the Addizione Erculea, built by 1505.
The Este drained marshes in the Po Delta, cutting canals and laying out estates, and built country retreats called delizie. Ferrara was listed in 1995, and the listing was extended to the delta in 1999.
