How it came to be

Kandy, in Sri Lanka's central hills, is thought to have been founded in the 14th century as Senkadagala. In 1592 it became the capital of the island's last independent kingdom, and Vimaladharmasuriya I brought the Buddha's tooth relic there from Delgamuwa.

The Temple of the Tooth, Sri Dalada Maligawa, was built beside the royal palace to house the relic. British troops entered Kandy in February 1815, ending Sinhalese royal rule. The Esala Perahera procession still carries a relic casket through the streets each July or August.

During the delay at Colombo she went up by train, saw the lake and library, and in an old temple surrounded by a moat was shown a piece of ivory said to be the tooth of Buddha. On the way back she visited the botanical garden at Peradeniya.
