How it came to be
Manovo-Gounda St Floris National Park was established in 1979 in the north of the Central African Republic, near the border with Chad. Covering 17,400 km², it runs from grassy plains in the north to savanna with gallery forests in the south. East African, West African and southern forest species meet here, and about 57 mammal and some 320 bird species have been recorded.
It was inscribed in 1988, but poaching and illegal grazing continued. The shooting of four park staff in early 1997 halted development projects and tourism. That same year the park was placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger, where it remains.
